The beautiful World Heritage town, Luang Prabang, will be turned in to a delightful river of light this month as they celebrate Boun Lai Heua Fai – known as the Festival of Light Boats.
On the evening of October 17 2016 there will be a large procession of lanterns and offerings that will be paraded down the main street to Wat Xiengthong. At the temple they will be blessed as part of a special Buddhist ceremony before being released into the Mekong River where they will create a sea of light as they float downstream.
The residents release these offerings into the river as a way of thanking their ancestors for taking care of them, and also to bring good luck to their families in the coming year.
If you are luck to be in Luang Prabang at this time you are welcome to buy a candle to release on the river to make a wish for your future.
