The Hai Van pass between Hue and Da Nang is one of the most beautiful passes in Vietnam. It’s very famous for spectacular views of the mountains, bays and islands. Along with Hue, Hoi An and Lang Co beach in the central Vietnam, the Hai Van pass is one of the not-to-be-missed places if you visit the region.
Travelling between Hue and Da Nang/Hoi An is an enjoyable day of spectacular scenery and history. You’ll see it appearing in many of our Vietnam itineraries including our small group tours, Discover Vietnam and Ultimate Vietnam.
Some years ago, the Hai Van pass was the only road connecting north and south Vietnam, until a landslide happened and the whole transport system in the region was suspended for a day or two.
As a result, the Government built the Hai Van pass tunnel. After the Hai Van pass tunnel was opened for traffic, it saved a lot of time travelling between Hue and Da Nang but also had the added benefit of taking away most of the daily traffic.
Built 1,172m above sea level, the 12 km tunnel is one of the 30 largest and most modern tunnels in the world.
This has left the spectacular scenery traversing the steep Hai Van pass road to tourists wanting to see the majestic sights.
So now you’ll understand when we include in your holiday a day spent enjoying the drive between Danang and Hue or vice-versa – over the Hai Van Pass!
