Home to some of the most picture-perfect beaches on the planet, pristine rainforests, abundance of wildlife, and some of the most warm and welcoming locals, Sri Lanka is a destination that offers experiences like no other.
For some, Sri Lanka may conjure up thoughts of the Knuckle Mountains or the markets of Colombo, others may recall it as the backdrop for the all-time classic movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, we know it for these along with a very, very long list of other amazing attractions.
Anuradhapura is home to some of South East Asia’s stunning archaeological and architectural wonders and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visiting the city at night time is a fantastic way to get a truly authentic local experience, or you can discover the unexplored parts of the city with an informative walking tour as well as tasting the unique, traditional cuisine. A cycling tour is another great option for exploring this amazing city.
Sigiriya offers what is perhaps Sri Lanka’s most spectacular sight. The near vertical walls of this rocky outcrop rise to a flat-topped summit upon which lies the ruins of an ancient civilisation. Also, in this region, a must do is our elephant experience. It will be an afternoon you’ll never forget as you get to wash and feed these gentle giants. As we are strong advocates of animal welfare, we do not offer an elephant riding experience on our tours.
Lunugamvehera National Park is largely unknown to tourists, making it quite a unique experience. The National Park was established in 1995 with the intent of being a sanctuary for local wildlife. The park offers the chance to see a vast array of wildlife in their natural habitat, including 21 fish species, 12 amphibians, 33 reptiles, 184 birds, and 43 mammal species which have all been recorded in the park. The teak plantations within the parks’ boundaries are frequented by elephants, while other parts of the park are home to buffalo, palm squirrel, porcupine, wild boar, mouse and spotted deer. Sloth bears and leopards can also be found in the park.
Renowned for its amazing spices, the local food in Sri Lanka is a key part of any experience. Our tasting notes tour takes place over 12 days and crosses 7 regions, giving members of this culinary tour the opportunity to experience the exceptional flavours each region has to offer. This journey will take you through Colombo, Negombo, Sigiriya, Jaffna, Trincomalee, Kandy, and Galle. As with all Active Asia NZ’s tours, we will customise your trip to ensure it ticks all the boxes of your ideal adventure or relaxation holiday.
