Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City
Upon arrival at Ho Chi Minh City Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Your local English-speaking guide will update you with all you need to know about Ho Chi Minh City including money matters, how to get around, what’s ahead on your tour plus you’ll receive our Ho Chi Minh City Guide on what to see, where to shop and eat.
Day 2: Ho Chi Minh City (B)
Today connect with the local way of life in this big city. As you start out for the day, experience a mode of transport from the past ‘the cyclo’, as we discover the Secrets of Saigon. Sit back and get up close with the buzzing streets as your cyclo driver expertly navigates you through the streets to Tao Dan Park to meet the community that makes this park special. The colourful wholesale flower markets are well worth a look and a walk-through ‘Antique Street’ reveals items from a bygone era. Here you’ll also get to sample a very common morning ritual of coffee – Vietnam style! Continue on and meander into a piece of Saigon’s past, into a part of Saigon that retains the old-style community housing. Walk the narrow alleyways between the houses and on to a bustling local market street. You’ll end early afternoon with a opportunity to taste a popular street food dish – Bun Thit Nuong before finishing at Ben Thanh Market where you may choose to be left to explore and shop or return to your hotel. Late afternoon and evening are spent at leisure.
Day 3: Ho Chi Minh City – Hoi An (B)
This morning rise early as you embark on a journey to find out about the Vietnamese passage to freedom. Depart the city by modern speedboat to travel upriver to the Cu Chi Tunnels, observe the impressive skyline merging into busy waterways followed by sedate parts of the river before arriving at the infamous Cu Chi Tunnels. Dug by hand, the tunnels were home to the Viet Cong during the US war. This impressive feat comes alive in the displays and a walk around the underground tunnels. Later, transfer to Ho Chi Minh City Airport for a flight to Danang in Central Vietnam. Upon arrival, transfer to your Hoi An hotel.
Day 4: Hoi An (B, D)
Enjoy a walking tour of Hoi An this morning. Learn about the fascinating history of this old trading town with visits to the historic buildings scattered around the narrow ancient walkways. Afterwards choose to stay in town for lunch (own expense), opt for a spot of shopping or head back to your hotel for some relaxation. Late afternoon, a cooking class is install where you’ll discover the in’s and out’s of the local cuisine. Your chef will introduce you to the local ingredients, take you through the preparation and explain the Hoi An style of cooking. It’s then your turn to chop, grate, crush, slice, roll and cook the ingredients into a delicious meal. Your five-course dinner also includes two additional Hoi An specialties – White Rose and Fried Wanton. These secret recipes are made by only one family in Hoi An and are included in the meal however are not part of the cooking class – they are secret recipes after all!
Day 5: Hoi An (B)
Today spend the day at leisure. Hoi An is one of the most popular places to visit in Vietnam with its charming old town filled with art shops, homewares, cafés and tailors. During the 17th and 18th centuries Hoi An was a major Asian trading centre, it is a wonderful town for getting clothes tailor-made or for buying souvenirs, Hoi An also boasts an excellent beach. Optional extra tours are available upon request (additional charge).
Day 6: Hoi An – Hanoi (B)
Rise early for a sunrise Hoi An boat trip. This magical journey showcases local fishing life along the river that makes Hoi An so special. Travel towards Duy Hai fishing village, flanked by sampans and coracle boats returning laden with squid and weary fishermen. Enjoy the incredible photo opportunities as the sun rises and the river including the surrounding villages come to life. This is a rare opportunity to experience a true slice of local life. Stop to visit the countryside market – Noi Rang, just as the early morning trading begins. Return along the river back to Hoi An for breakfast at your hotel. Late morning transfer to Danang Airport for a flight to Hanoi. Upon arrival, transfer to your Hanoi hotel.
Day 7: Hanoi (B)
Discover the culture of Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital city. Begin with a brief stop to view the Hanoi Opera House built between 1901-1911 by two French architects, continue on to visit one of Hanoi’s oldest buildings at an Ancient House, dating back to the 19th century. A stunning example of the architecture that prevailed throughout Hanoi. At a local gallery, browse antiques, artefacts and art of Vietnam’s 53 minority groups in this blend of gallery and museum. At Hanoi’s fresco street, Vietnamese and Korean artists have hand painted murals on 17 stone railway arches, these artworks create a space connecting heritage, art and community values. Lastly visit ‘Hanoi Train Street’ to see how the locals live and work just a few centimetres from the train tracks. The afternoon is then spent at leisure. You may wish to wander the Old Quarter, admire Hoan Kiem Lake or enjoy a cold bia hoi.
Day 8: Hanoi – Halong Bay (B, L, D)
No visit to Vietnam is complete with a visit to Halong Bay. A legendary world just waiting to be explored. Depart Hanoi through scenic countryside to reach Halong Bay. Arrive at Halong Bay around midday where you will board your cruise vessel for a delicious buffet lunch as it sets sails out amongst the stunning seascape. Spend the afternoon cruising amongst the limestone islands with select excursions along the way including optional onboard activities. Overnight on board.
Day 9: Halong Bay – Hanoi (B)
For the early risers, a Tai Chi session is available on the sundeck or you may wish to simply watch the sun rising from behind the mountains, enjoy dawn break with coffee and a light breakfast. Cruise back to port with stops along the way before enjoying a buffet brunch on board. Upon arrival at the port, disembark and transfer back to Hanoi.
Day 10: Hanoi (B)
Today, transfer to Hanoi Airport where tour arrangements end.
