Day 2: Datong (B, L, D)

After breakfast, visit a cave-dwelling before heading to the Hanging Monastery. The monastery quite literally ‘hangs’ on the sheer face of a vertical cliff. Only the 1,400 year old wooden pillars keep this mid-air temple aloft. An architectural wonder definitely worth seeing and experiencing. In the afternoon, visit Yingxian Wooden Pagoda in Yingxian County. Later, return to Datong City to stroll along the old streets and market.

Day 3: Datong – Beijing (B, D)

This morning, drive to visit the remnants of the Great Wall with the surrounding area. In the afternoon, visit the famous Yungang Grottoes situated west of Datong. The grottoes are dug out of a sandstone cliff which is part of the large Wuzhoushan Mountain range. The grottoes hold 51,000 statues of bodhisattvas, carved by artists from all over Asia more than 1,500 years ago. After dinner, transfer to Datong Railway Station for a train back to Beijing where you will be met and transferred to your city centre hotel.
