Begin with Shirakawago, situated at the foot of Mt.Hakusan in north western Gifu prefecture. It is a quiet mountain village with rice fields and a river running through it. The thatched roof houses stand together in the village, which is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next travel to Takayama, considered the gateway to the Japan Alps and the storehouse of Japan’s inland culture. It has a superb traditional downtown, great temples and excellent ryokan.
