General
If you’re a golfing fanatic, you will already know that Phuket and Bali are great Asian golfing destinations, but have you considered Sri Lanka? We think there is no finer destination for golf-loving explorers.
Begin at The Royal Colombo Golf Club, home of the Sri Lanka Golf Union, the governing body of Golf in Sri Lanka and only answerable to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrew’s in Scotland. Spend part of the day visiting Buddha’s tooth (yes, really) and a day golfing at the Victoria Golf Course, which was voted the best golf course in the sub-continent.
No trip to Sri Lanka would be complete without visiting the tea country. Head to the cool, misty hill station of Nuwara Eliya to enjoy the town’s wistful nostalgia with its mock Tudor houses set in carefully-tended gardens, red English post boxes, pink-painted post office and of course, spend your days mastering your game at the exceptional Nuwara Eliya Golf Course, built by British servicemen in 1889. The fairways are long and narrow and bordered by fir trees and thick bushes. It demands skilful position play and the hilly terrain makes it essential that players can cope with up-hill and down-hill lies.
Finally, head to Hambantota to experience a jeep safari at the Yala National Park. With the highest density of leopards in the world, you’ll see these spotted beauties roaming alongside elephants, sambar, spotted and barking deer, water buffalo, abundant (and we mean abundant) birdlife, butterfly swarms, iguanas, mongooses, fishing cats, wild boar, monkeys and crocodiles.
Shall we go? Add in playing a round of golf at the most extraordinary first golf resort in Sri Lanka, set amid a vast coconut palm plantation, offering spectacular views and unique challenges for both casual and seasoned players. You’ll be left with memories you won’t easily forget.
