General
For such a small island, Sri Lanka is bursting at the seams with history, heritage, culture and wildlife. From the ruined fortress of Sigiriya, to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, one can experience the crucible of Sinhalese life from a bygone era at every turn.
What’s more, Sri Lanka is home to some of the best wildlife and birdlife experiences in the whole of Asia. On this leisurely route, not only will you visit key sights, but you’ll also stay in remote areas offering tranquil settings away from the heavily trodden path. Leave the bustle of Negombo behind as you travel to Anamaduwa.
A laidback lodge offers you the chance to immerse yourself in nature or just sway on a hammock with a good book. Using Habarana as your base, catch the first rays of light at the summit of Pidurangala, and although an early start, then enjoy breakfast served atop the rock with a view of Sigiriya Rock Fortress. As a region rich in agriculture, take a walk through the life of a farmer and enjoy lunch at his house, cooked lovingly by his wife. No trip to Sri Lanka is complete without climbing the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, built by King Kashyapa as a result of a rivalry between two brothers. Still exploring within the Cultural Triangle, visit Polonnaruwa, enjoy a jeep safari at Minneriya National Park, admire the Dambulla cave temples and get to know the intimate corners of Kandy by tuk tuk.
The last part of your journey is spent in Koggala. Observe village communities at work and then a cooking demonstration. Learn about Sri Lankan spices and how the slightest variations change into different tastes. From kitchen to the Kanneliya Rainforest, with your tracker, whose home is on the edges of the forest reserve, expect to see plenty of birdlife, perhaps a few monkeys, unique bugs and maybe even snakes. The grand finale of this tour is a visit to Galle Fort where Sri Lankan culture collides with colonial architecture.
