Northern Vietnam
Vietnam’s many diverse inland hill tribes, who have largely managed to avoid the sprint towards modernity, are mainly based in northern Vietnam.
With the opening of more hotels in the northern heartland, it has now become possible to get off the beaten track without slumming it. From Hanoi, set off on a loop of the inland north; an area of outstanding natural beauty with the cultural artery of the Red River running through its centre. The scenery is as much a part of the experience as any of the specific destinations. Ky Son, where traditional rural architecture is beautifully displayed in a clutch of 200-year-old houses, is considered the homeland of the nation’s culture and has been continuously inhabited for over 2,000 years. Sapa is an essential stop for anyone keen to witness the striking beauty of Vietnam’s northern regions. Its blend of colourful tribal culture and mountain scenery make it a treasured destination never to forget. Local hilltribes scatter the surrounding scenery and fill the town with colour when they come to sell their wares. Next stop is Mai Chau, where hiking and biking for the adventurous is on offer to explore the lush surrounding area. Drive on to Ninh Binh, which is often described as Halong Bay on land owing to the towering limestone karst mountains and then on to visit the first royal Vietnamese capital at Hoa Lu along with the UNESCO listed Trang An Grottoes.
